What is happening with responsible consumption?

The month of responsible consumption invites us to reflect on the way we consume, the decisions we make every day, and, at the same time, the lifestyle we lead. It is an invitation to review what our relationship is like with ourselves, with others and with nature.

A sustainable lifestyle is one in which you are aware of the impact of your decisions, habits and behaviors, and you take action to reduce those with a negative impact and reinforce those with a positive impact. Seeks to be Sustainable Over Time: one feels in balance with oneself, with others and with nature; understanding the interrelation and interdependence that exists between the parts.


The purpose of this article is to publicize what is happening today in relation to responsible consumption in Latin America and the world, and what are the main trends observed: we believe that as decision makers, from our different roles, we can transform our actions to enhance the positive impact.

Identify types of changes based on their difficulty

My recommendation is that you choose up to 3 products with different types of difficulty in adopting to search for the first ones Quick Wins. These are quick successes, which in addition to positive results, will help you keep your enthusiasm and the flame burning to continue moving forward with your project “towards a sustainable lifestyle”.

Types of replacements and changes

  1. Direct replacement: same function, same product.
    Example: bamboo toothbrushes, reusable steel shavers, beeswax wraps, reusable bottles.
  2. Indirect replacement: same function, different product.
    Example: solid shampoo, returnable deodorant cream, menstrual cup.
  3. Incorporating a new behavior or habit:
    Example: composting, separating waste, carrying your own container.

Sort your options and get started

Take the initial list, classify the items according to these levels and choose the first 3. Once you've made friends with these changes, you can move forward with the next ones or repeat the exercise in another space in your home.


Small changes, big impact: how to start towards a sustainable lifestyle?

It is through several small changes that you start. Take advantage of your role as a consumer: we have the superpower of being demand; and wherever demand goes, supply goes. Remember to be patient, because changes take time, but they generate a ripple effect of adopting new sustainable practices.

When you want to change aspects of your lifestyle to make it more sustainable, the best thing is not to want to cover everything all at once. Choose an environment, observe the products and discards that compose it, and start with those first 3 changes. Those quick wins will help you maintain enthusiasm and move towards a more conscious and sustainable life.
