We are in a complex environmental and social context, marked by, among others, epidemics, wars and a linear model of consumption and production, with consequences linked to climate change that are being strengthened year by year. Therefore, it is essential that there are more and more organizations providing innovative solutions to the environmental and social challenges that surround us. In this sense, entrepreneurs are key players in developing businesses that generate positive impact and, as a consequence, promote sustainable development.
Sustainable development is one that makes it possible to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (1). A key year in its promotion was 2015, when the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established. This agenda includes 17 objectives and 169 goals associated with them, to be met by that year that combine social, environmental and economic objectives.
One of the highlights of the SDGs is that, to ensure their compliance, we all need to take action. And when we say everyone, we mean the involvement of governments, civil society and the private sector: all three actors have something to do.
Considering that compliance with the SDGs implies a systemic vision and all are interconnected, one of the SDGs with the greatest relevance for the private sector is SDG 12 “Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”, since it combines two sides of the same coin: production and consumption.
In the goals that compose it, we find key and strategic concepts for any organization to be a protagonist in the promotion of sustainable development:
It is within this framework, and considering the importance of more and more organizations promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns, that sustainable or impactful undertakings are increasingly gaining prominence and relevance. These are a business profile characterized by its quest to generate economic benefits as a result of an organizational policy that contemplates the preservation and regeneration of the environment and/or social welfare as an exclusive condition.
Let's design a tailor-made strategy
The main characteristics that define an impactful venture are:(2):
However, the path of an impactful venture is arduous and, often, unclear. To clarify this path a little, we summarize it in 6 stages:
It is on this point that we work from Kolibri, seeking, from a systemic perspective, to build bridges and link entrepreneurs with corporations and multilateral organizations. One case that stands out is the recent alliance between Kolibri and 3Vectors, through which we seek not only to provide quality information to entrepreneurs but also to methodologize that information so that it is action-oriented, being allies of enterprises in their quest to generate positive impact and thus also to approach our organizational purpose of accelerating the transition to a socially just and environmentally regenerative economy.
It is in the interest of all of us who make up Kolibri that there are more and more impactful companies in Latin America that collaborate to meet the Sustainable Development Goals and that, as a result, more sustainable consumption and production patterns are achieved.
